Happy New Year!! I hope everyone had a fun winter break and a nice long Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. 2016 is here, and I wish you good health, happiness and love for the year ahead. Check out some of the students' goals for the new year below.
Let's Kick Off A Great New Year
Last week the children set goals for themselves in 2016. Many of them wanted to improve in different things like helping with chores at home, reading, handwriting, math and more. I also encouraged them to try something new this year. After the children wrote paragraphs about their goals, the boys made football players and the girls made cheerleaders to go with their writing. Their work is displayed in the hallway on top of a football field.
Animal Research Project
The children are so excited that they finally completed their first research project. It has been a very challenging and rewarding experience for them. They read books about their animal during our Daily 5 time and gathered key information about it. They were asked to take notes about the animal's habitat, diet, behavior and family. They organized their information on a graphic organizer and typed their final copy in technology class. They added photographs, captions, definitions and fun facts to their work. In art class, Miss Carrera discussed Native American art and had the children create pictures of their animals. We put them together to form three totem poles. I hope you will check out their amazing work when I see you at our winter conference. (see photos)
The students also learned about the characteristics of biographies. To introduce this unit, we decided to learn about Martin Luther King Jr. After reading many books and watching a video about him, the children took their information and completed a writing project. It included an introduction, interesting facts, quotes, how he influenced others and more. They will share them with their classmates this week :)
Science
This quarter, we studied the Earth's Moon, its features and characteristics. We had a blast making moon dust, forming and measuring craters and seeing the phases of the moon. (see photos)
Health
Before the winter break, we completed our Child Abuse Prevention Unit. The children learned the following objectives.
