I am very happy to have your child in my math class this year. It will be a wonderful year :) This website was developed so you will always know what is happening in our classroom. I will send you an email every time I update the site so you will know when to check it.
Class Updates

The children have been working very hard in math class. We continue to work on adding and subtracting two digit numbers horizontally using many strategies. In order to do this, it is very important that the children learn how to add and subtract 10 and 100 mentally. ex. 45 + 10, 45 + 40. (2.NBT.8)
I am also teaching them different strategies for solving more challenging equations so they will be able to pick the one that works best for them. (2.NBT.5) My goal is that the children will be able to quickly add and subtract 2 and 3 digit equations mentally by the end of the year. *Vertical addition and subtraction is introduced during the fourth quarter in second grade. *
Strategy #1 ex. 65 + 18 = ?
Turn 18 into a "friendly number" by making it a 10 and 8
Add 65 + 10 = 75
Add 75 + 8 = 83
or
Add 65 + 8 = 73
Add 73 + 10 = 83
Strategy #2 ex. 65 + 18 = ?
Add tens 60 + 10 = 70
Add ones 8 + 5 = 13
Add 70 + 13 = 83
Strategy #3 ex. 65 + 18 = ?
Turn 18 into 20 (+2)
Add 65 + 20 = 85
85 - 2 = 83
or
Turn 18 into 20 (+2) and 65 into 63 (-2)
Add 63 + 20 = 83
Some other standards that were taught during the first quarter were (2.NBT.2) skip counting by 5's, 10's, 100's. (ex. 215, 225, 235, 245 ...), (2.OA.1) problem solving, (2.MD.7) telling time to the hour and half hour and (2.MD.8) counting money (pennies, nickels and dimes). We will revisit many of these concepts throughout the year. Check out the math photos tab.
Math Facts
We have reviewed the following facts in class. (2.OA.2) Please work on them at home as well.
+0, +1, +2 ( 8 + 1, 8 + 2, 8 + 0 ... )
Making 10 ( 7 + 3, 8 + 2, 6 + 4 ... )
Doubles ( 6 + 6 )
Beginning next week, I am going to test the children on the basic facts. These tests will be timed, however if a child does not complete it, I will give him/her extra time. I want the children to work on improving their time every week. The goal in second grade is for the students in complete 30 facts in 2 minutes at the end of second grade.

For the last few weeks, we have been working on understanding place value: ones, tens and hundreds. It is very important for the children to look at a number (764) and know that the 7 represents 7 hundreds = 700, the 6 is 6 tens = 60, and the 4 is 4 ones. This knowledge will help them as they begin to learn about three digit addition and subtraction later this year. They also need to know that when the place values are added together it equals the number. (expanded form) 700+60+4= 764.
We have also been working on adding and subtracting 10's and 100's on an empty number line. (ex. 760+300, 45+20.) I took it to the next level this week when I had the children add tens and hundreds to a three digit number. ex. 675+10. This was harder because the students needed to understand that the place value that changed was the tens and not the hundreds.
Some other standards that have been introduced are even and odd, greater than/less than and showing a model of a number using base ten blocks or squares, sticks and dots.

Math Homework:
- The students will have homework Monday-Thursday. The assignments are a review of concepts taught in class that day. If your child is having difficulty with it, please write me a note at the top of their paper. I will give him/her additional support the following day.
- Technology Tuesday- Please let me know if you are having difficulty accessing the homework online.
- Math Facts- In the near future, I will begin sending home math facts. Please store the facts in the bag that will be stapled to your child's folder. I would like the children to practice them every night for 5 minutes.
